Frances Yip

Born in 1948, Frances Yip is one of the most respected, gracious and celebrated singers of Asia. She started her career as a personal banker and policewoman who sang television commercial jingles for a living. But in 1980, Yip became a permanent household name in Asia after recording what the Chinese have awarded the “Song of the Decade”. Titled “The Beach of Shanghai”, this song was the theme song to Hong Kong’s most famous television series “The Bund” starring Chow Yun Fat and is known by all Asians no matter their cultural heritage or language dialect. Yip notes that she has performed this song more than 20,000 times in her 25-year career. “I cannot leave the stage without singing this song,” jokes Yip. She has released more than 80 albums in English and Cantonese, as well as in Thai, Japanese and Polynesian, and has performed to sold-out audiences in 30 countries over 5 continents. In 1998, Yip reached a significant milestone when she staged two sold-out concerts at the Hong Kong Coliseum, backed by the 92-piece Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. Recently, the international star has also performed 3  concerts backed by the 85-strong Macau Chinese Orchestra, with tickets being snapped up by music enthusiasts within hours. Unequivocally labeled as Asia’s leading lady of songs, Yip’s majestic interpretation of golden hits and charismatic stage presence have captivated a huge fan following wide across the globe. She is known as the “Barbara Streisand” of Asia who boasts impressive vocals and an eloquent speaking manner. Yip is an icon to the Chinese as well as a role model who has successfully beaten breast cancer.

In 2002, Yip performed to sold-out audiences with jazz singer and Grammy nominee Patti Austin in San Francisco and Los Angeles as part of a cross-cultural concert series. The San Francisco Mayor attended the performance and declared May 28th as “Frances Yip Day” to acknowledge her achievements and contributions in Eastern and Western music. Two years later, Yip became the first Hong Kong artist to perform with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra at the Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver, Canada.
