The concept arose after a students coordinator at a major university discovered there was a significant number of students who shared similar internal struggles about their future. Students were conflicted by trying to satisfy the desires of their parents to be in a successful and traditional profession, or to pursue their underlying passion instead. "Should I become a doctor or a rock star?" - they might ask. Or can one do both?
Johnny Hi-Fi is an alternative rock band from New York City where each of the band members balance a professional job while pursuing their underlying passion in music. Asif Khan M.D., the drummer, is a practicing physician in the field of Allergy and Immunology. Eric Hsu, the lead vocalist and guitarist, is the Chief Strategic Officer and founding member of an extremely profitable internet venture. Bassist Justin Matsubara founded a successful online company while guitarist Kim Henry is a successful graphic designer.
Against their underlying desires, they were each advised and pushed by their parents to pursue a well-respected and financially secure profession. Eric, Asif and Justin experienced the stereotypical difficulties faced by young adults in Asian-American households, i.e. academic success at any cost. Kim underwent her own struggle as a young woman faced to confront a male-dominated business world. Through perseverance, they all achieved professional success. While their full time jobs are time-consuming and intense, this has not discouraged them to pursue their rock star dreams. In fact, Johnny Hi-Fi recognizes that their jobs aid in their musical quest.
Now, Johnny Hi-Fi is bringing their stories to students at universities across the U.S. with responsibility, direction and resolve. Thus, Passion and Profession, the seminar, was born.
Passion and Profession is a non-profit (federal tax ID # pending), ethnic, cultural and professional identity-based workshop or panel designed to be a meeting of the minds, and a validation that through hard work, time management skills and desire, both passion and profession can be achieved. Passion and Profession is a concept conceived of and developed by Kashif Khan M.S.Ed., the current Coordinator of Asian American Student Services, Multicultural Center at The Ohio State University. The inaugural panel workshop/performance was made by and further developed by Johnny Hi-Fi, and inaugurated at the Ohio State University in 2004.
Students found solace in their advice and experiences. They answered questions on how to balance a life of passion and profession, as well as advised them on how to cope with being raised in a multicultural society.
The goals of this seminar are:
To unite all communities
Empowering participants to pursue any profession or desired goal.
Providing Advice on career choices and balancing them with personal desires
To promote leadership and address educational needs for the future
Overcoming multi-cultural stereotypes confronted on a daily basis in various environments.
Instilling confidence and motivation
Enhancing and commenting on the roles that multi-ethnic communities will play in the next 15-20 years
The benefits of a multi-cultural approach
To assist and encourage participants to promote positive social change
For Johnny Hi-Fi , this delicate and difficult balancing act has stabilized and the band's efforts have been rewarded via attention by MTV Chi and fans in Asia and America. In October of 2005, the band took time off from their full-time jobs to tour Taiwan and greet fans. Presently, the band is recording a new CD, touring the U.S., and more international dates are being booked.
This seminar is available to any person or organization that wishes to highlight these common issues faced by students. We can provide a positive and motivating example and outlet for students throughout America. To arrange a 'Passion and Profession' seminar at your university, please contact Dr. Khan. The seminar also includes a 20-60 minute performance by Johnny Hi-Fi at the beginning or conclusion of the event.
