Martina Hingis
Martina is known as one of the greatest females tennis players of the 20th Century. Her illustrious career has been filled with an enormous amount of successful championships. She currently has a total of 80 WTA Championship titles and 14 Grand Slam Titles. Of the Grand Slam titles 5 were singles tournaments and 9 were from doubles tournaments where she was able to get a calendar year Grand Slam in 1998.
Hingis is renowned for her tactical approach to the game of tennis and for her technical skills, enabling her to produce a large array of shots with finesse. She lacks the power possessed by many of her contemporaries; therefore, she relies on low error rates and good shot selection to keep opponents off-balance. She often uses change of direction and pace to catch opponents off guard and sharp angles to open up the court. She is also well known for her ability to break long rallies by hitting accurate drop shots and running to the net, where she is a skilled volleying. A signature play of Hingis is the drop shot followed by a lob, often resulting in an easy volley or overhead to finish the point.
Ranked as the #1 tennis player in the world for over 3 years, Martina decided to retire from tennis in 2002. After spending 4 years off of the tennis court, Martina made a comeback to the tournament circuit in 2006. In her comeback she was able to win three WTA tournaments and was ranked # 6 in the world. In 2007, Martina ran into a series of injuries that would ultimately force her to retire permanently from the pro circuit.
